Indian police search for evidence in bomb attack
HYDERABAD, India (AP) ? Indian police are investigating whether a shadowy Islamic militant group was responsible for a dual bomb attack that killed 16 people outside a movie theater and a bus station in the southern city of Hyderabad, a police official said Friday.
The group, the Indian Mujahideen, is thought to have links with militants in neighboring Pakistan. India's recent execution of an Islamic militant is being examined as a possible motive for the bombings, said the official, an investigator who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to reveal details of the probe.
Police have not detained anyone in connection with Thursday evening's attacks, the first major terror bombings in India since 2011.
According to a New Delhi police report, two suspected Indian Mujahideen militants who were arrested last year said during questioning that they had done reconnaissance of Dilsukh Nagar, the Hyderabad district where the blasts occurred. They had also visited various spots in New Delhi, Mumbai and Pune.
In a statement in India's Parliament, Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde said that in response to the "cowardly terror attack," the government will "make all efforts to apprehend the perpetrators and masterminds behind the blast and ensure that they are punished as per the law."
Earlier Friday, as he toured the site of the bombings, Shinde said there had been a general alert about the possibility of an attack somewhere in India for the past three days. "But there was no specific intelligence about a particular place," he said.
The bombs were attached to two bicycles about 150 meters (500 feet) apart in Hyderabad's Dilsukh Nagar district, Shinde said. He said in addition to the 16 dead, 117 others were injured.
The bombs exploded minutes apart in a crowded shopping area. The blasts shattered storefronts, scattered food and plates from roadside restaurants and left tangles of dead bodies. Passersby rushed the wounded to hospitals.
Top state police officer V. Dinesh Reddy said improvised explosive devices with nitrogen compound were used in the blasts, which he blamed on a "terrorist network."
Pakistan strongly condemned the blasts.
"Terrorism in all its forms and manifestations constitutes one of the most serious threats to international peace and security. All acts of terrorism are unjustifiable regardless of their motivation," the Pakistan Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
On Friday morning, Indian police with cameras, gloves and plastic evidence bags used pointers to gingerly look through the debris in Hyderabad. Officials from the National Investigation Agency and commandos of the National Security Guards arrived from New Delhi to help with the investigation.
India has been under a heightened state of alert for nearly two weeks since Kashmiri militant Mohammed Afzal Guru was hanged for his involvement in a 2001 attack on India's Parliament that killed 14 people, including five of the gunmen.
Since the execution, near-daily protests have rocked Indian-ruled Kashmir, where many people believe Guru did not receive a fair trial. Anger in a region where anti-India sentiment runs deep was further fueled by the secrecy with which the execution was carried out.
Hyderabad, a city of 10 million in the state of Andhra Pradesh, is a hub of India's information technology industry and has a mixed population of Muslims and Hindus.
"This (attack) is to disturb the peaceful living of all communities in Andhra Pradesh," said Kiran Kumar Reddy, the state's chief minister.
The explosions were the first major terror attack since a September 2011 blast outside the High Court in New Delhi killed 13 people. The government has been heavily criticized for its failure to arrest the masterminds behind previous bombings.
Thursday's attack occurred in the same Hindu-dominated area where a blast outside a Hindu temple killed two people in 2000. In 2007, a twin bombing killed 40 people in two other Hyderabad districts.
The United States, whose secretary of state, John Kerry, met Thursday in Washington with Indian Foreign Secretary Ranjan Mathai, condemned the attack.
"The United States stands with India in combating the scourge of terrorism and we are also prepared to offer any and all assistance Indian authorities may need," State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said at a news briefing.
Rana Banerji, a former security official, said India remains vulnerable to such attacks because there is poor coordination between the national government and the states. Police reforms are moving very slowly and the quality of intelligence gathering is poor, he said.
"The concept of homeland security should be made effective, on a war footing," he said.

Police: Hotel altercation sparked Vegas shooting
LAS VEGAS (AP) ? Bullets were flying from a black Range Rover at a gray Maserati as the vehicles raced toward a red light on the Las Vegas Strip.
Beneath the neon lights, police say, the Maserati ran the red light at one of the Strip's busiest intersections and smashed into a taxi that exploded into flames early Thursday, killing the two people inside.
Three more cars and a utility truck collided at the crossroads home to Bellagio, Caesars Palace and Bally's, leaving at least six more people injured as the Range Rover sped off in the predawn darkness.
The Maserati driver was pronounced dead at a hospital.
The dramatic scene that more than one tourist compared to something out of a violent action movie set off a frantic search for the occupants of the Range Rover and marked the latest violent episode on the Strip since the beginning of the year.
Two people were critically wounded in a shooting at a parking garage on Feb. 6, and a tourist was stabbed last Saturday in an elevator at The Hotel at Mandalay Bay.
Clark County Sheriff Doug Gillespie told reporters several hours after Thursday's attack that it was sparked by an argument in the valet area of the nearby Aria hotel-casino, and that the violence at the intersection of Las Vegas Boulevard and Flamingo Road did not reflect the values of Las Vegas residents or visitors.
"What happened will not be tolerated," Gillespie said. He promised the shooters would be "found and prosecuted to the full extent of the law."
On the Strip, the fiery rampage shocked tourists.
"This doesn't happen where we come from, not on this scale," said Mark Thompson, who was visiting from Manchester, England, with his wife. "We get stabbings, and gang violence, but this is like something out of a movie. Like 'Die Hard' or something."
Police said they were contacting authorities in three neighboring states about the Range Rover Sport with dark tinted windows, distinctive black custom rims and paper dealer ads in place of license plates that fled the scene about 4:20 a.m.
In Southern California, the California Highway Patrol alerted officers in at least three counties to be on the lookout for the SUV.
Las Vegas Police Sgt. John Sheahan said the Range Rover was last seen near the Venetian resort as it headed north from the shooting scene on Las Vegas Boulevard.
Witnesses also told police the SUV and Maserati had come from the nearby CityCenter area, the home of Aria just south of the site of the attack.
"We have numerous witnesses to this," Sheahan said. "But what is the genesis of this? We don't know yet."
Predawn jogger Eric Lackey was on his way back to the New York-New York hotel when he snapped a cellphone photo of the blazing scene moments after the crash. Black smoke billowed from the flaming taxi, amid popping sounds from the fire.
Lackey, of Forest Hill, Md., said a security officer in a yellow shirt performed CPR on a person on the sidewalk while police officers canvassed a small crowd of perhaps 15 onlookers gathering at the scene.
"Police were asking if anyone was still in the vehicles and if they heard gunfire," Lackey told The Associated Press. "That's when I realized it wasn't just a regular accident."
Sheahan said police have video from traffic cameras at the intersection and were checking hotel surveillance systems. The video will not be made public, he said.
Police said the driver and passenger in the taxi were killed. The male driver of the Maserati also died, and his passenger was shot. Police did not release their names, citing the ongoing investigation.
The crumpled, gray sports car, which had no license plates, came to rest several feet away from the incinerated taxi.
"The people I feel sorry for are the people in the taxi," said Elvina Joyce, a tourist from Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada. "Seconds made all the difference in the world for them. Wrong place, wrong time."
The area near the scene has been the site of high-profile violence in the past.
Rapper Tupac Shakur was killed in a drive-by in 1996 about a block away under similar circumstances, as assailants opened fire on his luxury sedan from a vehicle on Flamingo Road. The killing has never been solved.

Tea has become a daily part of my life, but it may, or may not, be for the reasons you are thinking. I have put together my 3 Reasons Why I Don?t Drink Tea ? and my 3 Reasons Why I Do.
3 Reasons Why I Don?t Drink Tea:
#1. I don?t drink tea for nostalgic reasons.?I know that drinking tea is nostalgic for many people.?So many people drink tea because their grandmother did. Or because it?s part of their family history. Sometimes I wish I had those sweet stories in my life, but I just don?t. I didn?t grow up in a tea drinking family and while at some point my parents did start making ?sun tea? (iced tea?, I can?t say I ever saw a hot cup a tea in our home when I was a kid.
# 2. ?I don?t drink tea for the?caffeine.? While I?m not living?caffeine?free, and I?ve have had points in my life where I was living?caffeine?free (such as when I was trying to?conceive,?when I was pregnant, and when I was breastfeeding), that time is not now. I like my caffeine. I drink coffee every single morning and it?s full of caffeine. But, that?s not why I drink tea. I don?t drink tea to wake me up and I don?t drink tea to keep me going throughout the day.
#3. I don?t drink tea for the health benefits. I know that there is many wonderful?health benefits of tea?and that this is a main reason why many people drink tea daily. Every time I read learn new information on the powers of tea, I?m impressed and happy to know that it?s an added perk to my tea drinking. But tea health benefits don?t factor in for me as one of the reason why I drink tea.
3 Reasons Why I Do Drink Tea:

#1. I drink tea because it?s a calming ritual. When I lost my Dad and two sisters within a year of each other, I was constantly searching for things to make myself feel better. I wanted ? and needed ? something that would be a calming distraction in my life and tea fit that purpose. My tea ritual consists of finishing dinner with my family and then I tidy up the kitchen. When I am finished with the kitchen, I heat my water, select my Bigelow tea bag, and prepare my nightly cup of tea. I?ve found this ritual to be incredibly comforting?probably because I know it leads to reason #2?
#2. I drink tea because it slows me down. I feel like I?m constantly going and busy is my middle name. When I drink tea, I do my best to focus on the tea and my thoughts. It slows me down and reminds me that I don?t always have to be ?busy?. It?s good to stop, it?s good to take a break and I will actually be better for it. ?Teas instantly gives me this ?slow down? feeling the second I feel the warmth of the cup in my hands.
#3.?I like the taste and the large variety of flavors.?Ever since my first cup of black tea, I have enjoyed the taste. And I like the taste of many herbal teas and others as well. Most of my grocery stores have a huge assortment of teas that I can never get tired of them (you can see my shopping trip for tea here). I do have my favorites though. I would say my absolute favorite right now Bigelow Peppermint Tea. But because there is so many varieties of Bigelow tea, I can keep trying new ones and I have continued to find even more that I like. Such as their ?Constant Comment? tea ? which is also in my top 5 favorite tea flavors. And, in the case of Bigelow Tea, the cost is about 10 cents per tea bag, making it a frugal way of treating myself each day.

Police in New York are pioneering a futuristic new crime-fighting system that lets them see surveillance camera images from anywhere in the city and creates an interactive data map revealing arrest figures, license plates and radiation levels? - all at the click of a button.
The Microsoft software, called ?the dashboard?, sends an alert to officers as soon as an emergency call is made and operates a giant video wall that allows cops to watch more than 3,000 cameras city-wide as crimes are unfolding.
It has been in use for a year but could now be rolled out to other forces in a move that could make tens of millions of dollars for New York Police Department, which gets a 30 per cent cut of any sales.

The Domain Awareness System instantly shows officers an interactive map of the neighbourhood of where the initial call relates to, footage from nearby security cameras, whether there are high radiation levels and whether any other threats have been made against the city.
Officers in America's biggest police department have been using the system, which gives access to the department's voluminous arrest records, telephone calls, more than 3,000 security cameras citywide, license plate readers and radiation detectors, for about a year.

And the NYPD could make tens of millions of dollars under an unprecedented marketing deal that allows Microsoft to sell the system to other law enforcement agencies and civilian companies around the world. The city will get a 30 per cent cut.

It is currently used only in NYPD offices, mostly in the counterterrorism unit. Eventually, the system could supply crime-fighting information in real time to officers on laptops in their squad cars and on mobile devices while they walk the beat.?
Jessica Tisch, director of planning and policy for the counterterrorism unit, said: 'It works incredibly well.'
In August, officers used the system during a deadly shooting outside the Empire State Building.
Dozens of emergency telephone calls were coming in, and it initially looked like an attack staged by several gunmen. But officers mapped the information and pulled up cameras within 500 feet of the reported shots to determine there was only one shooter.?
At about 9am on Friday, August 24, disgruntled employee Jeffrey Johnson hid behind a car and then pulled out a .45-caliber pistol on his ex-boss Steven Ercolino and fired at his head.
After Ercolino fell to the ground, Johnson stood over him and shot four more times, a witness told investigators.
The incident sparked early-morning chaos and multiple other injuries near the Empire State Building.
Johnson was scuppered in his plans to escape after a construction worker saw the killing, chased him down the street and alerted police, who shot the gunman dead.
In the rush-hour ruckus, nine passersby were injured. Two people - the gunman and his former boss - were killed.

Analysts are cautious about the potential profits, saying that largely depends on Microsoft's sales efforts and whether any major competition arises. While there other data-drilling products made by other companies, they say the NYPD's involvement could set the dashboard apart.
'This is the kind of stuff you used to only see in movies,' analyst Rob Enderle of Enderle Group, a technology analysis firm, said.
'Getting it to work in a way that police departments can use in real time is huge.'
The venture began in 2009 when the NYPD approached Microsoft about building software to help mine data for the Lower Manhattan Security Initiative, a network of private and public cameras and other tools monitored by the department's counter-terrorism bureau.

Officers were involved throughout the process with the programmers, offering advice on what they need during an emergency.
'It was created by cops for cops,' Tisch said. 'We thought a lot about what information we want up close and personal, and what needs to be a click away. It's all baked in there.'
Dave Mosher, a Microsoft vice president in charge of program management, said the company started to market the system in August and is looking at smaller municipalities, law enforcement agencies and companies that handle major sporting events.
No firm timetable has been set on when the dashboard will be rolled out to the entire 34,000-offficer department.?

Did two American executives fake their deaths in Mexico?
The reporter in Mexico who described the purported death of two American executives with a crumbling business said they were likely not killed and he may have been "fed" the story.
Antonio Neri Johnston, a reporter for El Occidental newspaper in Guadalajara, Mexico, wrote a story on Feb. 11, describing that the bodies of Americans Michael Davies and Derald Johnston, identified as the CEO and CFO, respectively, of Southridge Enterprises in Dallas, had been discovered.
Johnston said a man who claimed to be a police officer in a remote village said two bodies were found in a river with documents showing their identities.
"The strange thing is, they called me, but also other colleagues," Johnston, who could not be reached for comment today, told Dallas ABC affiliate WFAA.
But Johnston said neither local police nor American authorities have evidence of a crime where the bodies were found, nor that the men have been reported missing or even that they existed in the first place.
"We were fed a story, and many of us ran with it," Johnston told The Dallas Morning News.
The Securities and Exchange Commission terminated Southbridge Enterprises Inc. registration in 2011, noting that there were approximately 134 stock "holders of record." ABC News was not successful in attempts to contact an attorney and law firm once associated with the company, Carrillo Huettel LLP, in San Diego, Calif.
According to one of its press releases on its website, Southridge Minerals announced in November 2012 that it "hired new legal representation" but did not specify which law firm.
Southridge Mineral states that it was in the "development and acquisition of gold and silver mines in Mexico," but Bandera Gold, a competing company, said Southridge claimed to have business in places in Mexico where none existed.
Starting in early 2012, Southridge began issuing press releases indicating that it had surface rights to Cinco Minas in Jalisco, Mexico, something that caught the attention of Bandera Gold, a gold exploration company in Alberta, Canada, that said it has ownership of the land.
Bandera Gold has been in a legal dispute with its former joint venture partner since 2008 over a $5.6 million agreement to invest in Cinco Minas,
"[Southridge] was claiming a comprehensive drill program and they were intercepting bonanza grades -- all of which when we were acutely aware the site was dormant. It has not had activity since late 2007," said Stephen Roehrig, Bandera's CEO.
Concerned that Bandera Gold's shareholders might be confused by the conflicting information, Roehrig said he hired an independent security team to monitor the site and found no evidence of mining activity.
Roehrig told ABC News Bandera sent "cease and desist" letters to the address Southridge registered with the SEC. Those letters returned "undeliverable."
Linda Coker, the tenant relations manager at the Dallas office building of Southridge and Southridge Minerals, told the Dallas Morning News that Southridge does not lease space in the building, though she said the company may have had a temporary or virtual office operation there.
"We made efforts to try and communicate with them," Roehrig told ABC News. "There's never been evidence that he at all exists. All attempts to communicate with him ended up as a dead end."
The SEC suspended trading in Southridge stock after the company issued a statement claiming that it had a joint partnership in Mexico with Kinross Gold Corp. of Canada. Kinross told the SEC there was no such deal.
