FDA staff say calcitonin salmon cancer risk appears plausible
(Reuters) - Staff reviewers for the U.S. Food and Drug Administration said that a potential increased risk of cancer with drugs containing calcitonin salmon appears plausible.
In briefing documents released on Friday, the reviewers said the risk raises concerns about the overall risk versus benefit of calcitonin products to treat osteoporosis in postmenopausal women.
Calcitonin products include Novartis AG's Miacalcin injection and nasal spray and Unigene Laboratories Inc's nasal spray. Privately held Upsher Smith Laboratories Inc distributes Unigene's product in the United States. Generic calcitonin products are also available.
Calcitonin salmon is a man-made version of the hormone calcitonin that is found in salmon.
The reviewers said significant questions remain about calcitonin salmon's effectiveness in reducing fractures in the treatment of postmenopausal osteoporosis.
An advisory panel to the FDA is scheduled to discuss the products on March 5 and will make a recommendation to the agency on whether to allow the continued marketing of these products for that use.
Last July European regulators recommended that long-term use of calcitonin be curtailed after a review found evidence of a small increased risk of cancer with long-term use of the drugs.
They recommended that they should only be authorized for short-term use in Paget's disease, a bone disorder; for acute bone loss due to sudden immobilization; and for excess calcium in the blood caused by cancer. They ruled that the benefits of calcitonin-containing medicines did not outweigh their risks in the treatment of osteoporosis and that they should no longer be used for this condition.
Unigene officials declined to comment on the FDA staff review as they do not distribute a calcitonin product in the United States. Upsher Smith officials were not immediately available for comment. Novartis said in a statement that it "places the highest priority on patient safety and the appropriate use of its medicines and is looking forward to the opportunity to engage in the discussion at the upcoming meeting."
Unigene shares were down 20.65 percent at $0.12 on the pink sheets. Novartis shares were up 1 percent.

Minecraft—Pocket Edition (for Android)
After conquering the PC with Minecraft, Swedish indie developer Mojang compacted the game's creative and addictive gameplay into Minecraft?Pocket Edition for Android ($6.99). While hardcore Minecraft players might be impatient with Pocket Edition's limitations, like the few kinds of blocks, it packs the soul of Minecraft into the body of a mobile device.
Like Minecraft, in Pocket Edition players are dropped into a landscape made of different kinds of cubes. Players "mine" these cubes, which can in turn be used to "craft" buildings and items?hence the name.
Pocket Edition comes with two modes: creative and survival. In creative mode, players can fly around the game world and build using an infinite supply of materials. The core gameplay is in survival mode, where daytime is for building above ground (stacking blocks to make castles, bridges, etc.), and night brings monsters who attack players and destroy their creations. There's no story, and the only advantage you have in a hostile environment is creativity.
First Impressions
For a longtime player of Minecraft, some aspects of Pocket Edition breathe new life into the game. Jumping into combat against a squad of skeletons in the dead of night and frantically tapping the screen feels thrilling and dangerous. When building my first home, I didn't want to put the game down.
Pocket Edition looks great (in its own, blocky way) on mobile devices and the controls are extremely responsive. Even with 15 other apps running in the background and the game's graphics set to "fancy," I only noticed the slightest stutters as I skimmed over the digital landscape in creative mode. Though I did notice my Samsung Galaxy S III became noticeably warmer, even through the touchscreen. Survival, which has AI monsters, had a few laggy moments but nothing that interrupted gameplay. ?
Annoyingly, during periods of darkness in-game the grease spots on the screen become especially noticeable. This is gross, but worse it makes the screen even harder to see.
Getting Around
Pocket Edition has a highly mobile control scheme with directional arrows and a jump button at the center. Tapping and holding the forward button pulls up left and right strafe buttons on either side, which you can tilt or slide your thumb toward. This is a welcome addition in version 0.6.1, and lets you move in a much more dynamic way. It's also easier to circle attacking enemies during combat.
To interact with the world, you select blocks with your thumb and tap and hold to mine them. While mining, a halo appears around your thumb which fills as you work through the mineral before it breaks with a jolt from the phone's vibrator. Satisfying! Experienced players will note that you can mine and place blocks much farther away in Pocket Edition than on the PC version, which makes for easier mobile play.
Purists can also opt to "split controls" in the options menu, which restores the center-screen reticle and mouse-like functionality. It feels like awkwardly playing an emulation of a PC game without a mouse, and I found the default touch controls to be better.
Creative mode has a slightly different interface, giving players access to a palette containing every block in the game. Players can also fly, which was awkward in previous versions but greatly improved as of 0.6.1
One of Pocket Edition's greatest strengths is its seamless multiplayer capabilities, provided all the players are on the same Wi-Fi network. Players can jump in and out of any other player's world, making it easy to pick up and start playing with friends. However, it does lack ban commands. If you're concerned about griefing, be sure to keep your Pocket Edition world hidden.
Unfortunately, Pocket Edition players cannot currently connect to PC Minecraft multiplayer servers.

Tiny computer chip could go in toys, shoes - and you
Freescale Semiconductor, maker of fine computer chips, announced on Thursday the world's smallest ARM-powered chip. The KL02 is about as big as a hat for a bee, but it has everything a real computer needs.
It comprises a processor, 4 kilobytes of RAM, 32 kilobytes of storage and a nice little input/output port ? if you look very closely. It may not sound like much compared to the meanest specs on the cheapest laptop or phone these days, but the KL02 isn't meant to stream Netflix or run "Angry Birds."
Chips this small are meant to be embedded in things, and the KL02 is the smallest and most capable one out there. Something like this could live in the heel of your shoe ? or in your shoelace, for that matter! Or it could live in an watch, or a pocket knife, or a key; It's also small enough to fit inside a pill.
Yes: While it could empower all manner of day-to-day objects with the ability to report to your phone or computer, perhaps the most interesting application is inside you.
Internal sensors exist already, but this one is smaller and more efficient by far, allowing it to operate more autonomously and on less power. A swallowable pill could keep itself in the stomach and monitor sugar intake for diabetics, or constantly check the liver for harmful buildup ? without the need for external power or other electronics.
Where will it show up first? Freescale isn't saying, although the chip was designed to fit the specifications of a mystery customer. Is it a medical research firm ? or Nike? Only time will tell, but you can be sure that chips like the KL02 will be showing up more and more often over the next decade.

'Top Chef' finale: Will Kristen or Brooke win?

For "Top Chef: Seattle" finalists Kristen Kish and Brooke Williamson, it's time to unpack their knives and go!
In Wednesday night's season 10 finale, the ladies will prepare five of their best dishes -- live in front of a studio audience. In addition to their own guests, the spectators will include the champions of all nine previous seasons of "Top Chef."
(In other words, no need to fear a repeat of season nine's cross-country ski/target-shooting "Culinary Olympics." What that had to do with cooking, we're not sure.)
Brooke, the steely owner of two acclaimed Los Angeles gastropubs, has dominated the competition for weeks. Then again, she hasn't had to square off against Kristen since the former model was eliminated in the 11th round.
After winning four challenges, Kristen was sent home during the infamous Restaurant Wars. (While Josie stayed. Boo! Hiss!) But then she sliced and diced five other eliminated cheftestants in the Last Chance Kitchen to earn her spot in the finale.

SANAA, Yemen (AP) ? Tens of thousands of Yemenis held mass rallies in the capital and across the country calling for the prosecution of ousted leader Ali Abdullah Saleh, who is under pressure to leave the country for allegedly hindering democratic transition.
The Thursday protests came one day after Saleh appeared publicly for the first time in 18 months. He vowed his party would contest presidential and parliamentary elections next year.
Saleh was forced to step down after a yearlong uprising as part of transfer of power agreement that granted him immunity from prosecution.
