Long-term review: 2012 Ferrari California - Week 5

Our long-term California?s final week at wheels towers has been a fittingly adventurous one. To give it the send-off that it deserves, we lined up two other stunning grand tourers for one last blast around magnificent dune-lined roads on the fringes of Dubai. Enter the new Aston Martin DB9 and the Maserati Gran Turismo Sport.

With a complement of two snorting V8s and a V12, our noisy cavalcade headed out of town and deep into the UAE desert. While I shall not delve into the finer points of the other cars for the fear of giving away too much about this upcoming story, the California proved every bit a stunning mile-muncher.

It shrugged off the 300km round trip and everything from the suspension to the gearbox is finely tuned for long-haul travels. Greeted with corners, the Cali does tend to lean a bit more than you?d expect, but never alarmingly so.

Although its awkwardly high stance would suggest otherwise, the Ferrari was clearly the quickest of all the cars congregated for our feature. The high ride height also meant it was less likely to scrape its belly while passing over speed bumps than the other two.

Article continues below

When we tested the previous California on the track years ago, the brakes felt spongy. It?s a problem that?s been resolved with the new carbon ceramic discs on our tester: even after hours of hard workout, they remained resolutely fade free. The best thing, by far, though is the 4.3-litre V8 revving to over 8,000rpm ? it makes a glorious noise.

There are some minor problems, however. The back seats are not designed to accommodate humans, the boot space is appalling, it?s thirsty when driven hard, and the infotainment system is straight out of a Jeep and looks completely out of place in the Poltrona Frau-dressed cabin.

However, having spent nearly six weeks with the California, I can say it with utter conviction that it?s a car you can easily live with every day. It?s feisty when you want it to be, but settles down when you?re not in the mood. Most of all, it?s not the temperamental Italian exotic of automotive folklore ? it?s a thoroughly dependable GT.

I know there?s the question of the price. A well-specced car, similar to our long-termer is hardly a snip at over Dh800,000. Furthermore, there are some serious rivals in the class ? such as the aforementioned Aston, which is better looking, although the Fezza looks pretty good in darker shades (avoid the garish yellows and reds; they only look good on the Italia) ? but the California strikes a great balance between sportiness and comfort.

If you?re in the market for, say, something like an M6 or an SL 65, I implore you to raid the back of your designer sofa, find the extra dirhams, and give the California a serious look. You won?t be disappointed.

Average fuel economy: 20 litres-per-100km

Highs: Superb grand tourer, engine, easy to use around town

Lows: Tiny back seats, lack of boot space, some ergonomics issues

Everyone?s in on the brand-name sound systems in cars these days ? you?ve got Lexicon, Mark Levinson, Bang & Olufsen, Bowers & Wilkins, you name it. Well, Volkswagen went with Fender (available exclusively in the new Beetle, Jetta and our Passat), maybe because it ran out of options or maybe because the system is actually really good. But VW?s bit, the software hiding behind the 6.5in screen, messes up the presets of my radio stations.

If I?m on the last preset and I pause to listen and then realise it?s Bieber playing, I scroll to the next station only to find that the thing starts again from the back and selects the last preset again and then, yes, it?s too late and I?ve got the Bieber stuck in my head all day.

Futures slide on meager growth figures

NEW YORK (AP) ? Stock futures slid Wednesday after the government revealed that economic growth in the U.S. shrank in the final quarter of 2012, the first time that has happened in more than three years.

Dow Jones industrial futures fell 12 points to 13,896. The broader S&P futures gave up 2.6 points to 1,502.50. Nasdaq futures slipped 3 points to 2,739.75.

Part of the reason for the slowing growth was the biggest cutback in U.S. defense spending in four decades.

The economy contracted at an annual rate of 0.1 percent in the fourth quarter, according to the Commerce Department. That's a sharp slowdown from the 3.1 percent growth rate in the July-September quarter, and it was worse than most economists had expected.

It immediately raised questions about the strength of the economic recovery going forward, given the tax increases that went into effect this month, and also additional government spending cuts that are on the way.

There were encouraging signs in the Commerce Department report.

There was a growth in business and consumer spending, the latter making up about 70 percent of overall economic growth.

Attention now turns to the Federal Reserve, which wraps up a two-day policy meeting Wednesday and could provide hints about interest rates going forward. While government spending cuts and a slower inventory buildup shaved a total of 2.6 percentage points from growth, both of those numbers tend to be volatile.

And a private survey Wednesday also showed that U.S. businesses increased hiring in January compared with a revised December reading.

Employers added 192,000 jobs in January, according to payroll processor ADP. That's more than December's revised number of 185,000, which had initially been reported at 215,000.

The ADP report is derived from payroll data and tracks total nonfarm private employment each month. The increase in hiring occurred after Congress and the Obama administration reached an agreement on Jan. 1 to avoid sharp tax increases and across-the-board government spending cuts.

Also on Wednesday, Boeing topped most Wall Street expectations for the fourth quarter. More importantly perhaps, the plane maker said that earnings this year will be $5 to $5.20 per share, with revenue of $82 billion to $85 billion. The outlook assumes "no significant financial impact" from the grounding of the 787, the company's most advanced aircraft that has suffered a series of mishaps.

U.S. investigators said Wednesday that they have asked Boeing Co. to provide a full operating history of lithium-ion batteries used in its grounded 787 Dreamliners after Japan's All Nippon Airways revealed it had repeatedly replaced the batteries even before overheating problems surfaced.

Jays t-Jays Three

Jays, the Swedish earphone manufacturer, produces a lot of similarly named products, which also happen to have similar designs. The look is clean, simple, and usually black, and the audio performance often emphasizes bass response. The $99.99 (direct) Jays t-Jays Three is the top-of-the-line option in the t-Jays series (there are several other lines, like a-Jays, c-Jays, and q-Jays), and it boasts some pretty powerful audio performance, with deep bass and highly sculpted high-mids and highs. Vocals sound crisp, and stand alongside intense low frequencies. In no way is this a pair for purists, but at $100, the t-Jays Three offers a solid array of accessories (no mobile device controls, though) and impressive sound.

Design
The t-Jays Three are a uniform, matte black, and the overall design is simple?the only real flourish is the etched logo on each earpiece. The earpiece's angled contour incorporates a vented bass port, helping to provide some of the booming low frequency response, but also to stabilize the earpiece, as it presses gently against the outer ear. Earpieces can be worn either straight, with the cable pointing down, or upside down, for added stability, with the cable looping over and behind the upper ridge of the ear.Jays t-Jays three inline

While there is no inline microphone or remote control for mobile devices, the t-Jays Three is not light on accessories. Overall, it ships with five pairs of silicon rubber ear tips (which, incidentally, attract dust and pet hair rather easily), a cleverly designed hard shell case that looks a little like Pac-Man when opened (if Pac-Man were made of matte and glossy black plastic), a dual headphone jack adapter for sharing your sound source with another listener, an airplane jack adapter, and a cable extension that allows you to choose between cable lengths of 23.5 or 51 inches.

Performance
On deep bass tracks, the t-Jays Three packs a wallop?the sound here is nowhere near flat response, with healthily boosted sub-bass frequencies. At top, (and unsafe) listening levels, the drivers don't distort, even on tracks with serious sub-bass content, like the Knife's "Silent Shout." Clean, distortion-free performance is always what you hope for, but at top volumes, and on pairs around or below the $100 mark, this is not always a given. Because the earpiece design incorporates bass ports, the drivers are able to deliver some serious push and reasonable definition and detail in the low frequency realm.

The t-jays Three are also quite crisp, with a nice amount of focus on the high-mids, allowing a nice treble edge to keep things from getting muddy. Bill Callahan's baritone vocals on "Drover" benefit from this sculpting, helping to add definition to his rich delivery. Guitars and percussion also get an added mid-high presence. On certain mixes, things can sound a bit too bright, but generally speaking, the tweaked high-mids help balance out the intense bass response.

Classical tracks, like John Adams' "The Chairman Dances," don't always benefit in the same manner as Callahan's vocals?the higher register strings can sound a bit too edgy and bright, and while the lower register strings definitely receive a boost as well, it's the high strings and percussion, such as woodblock hits, that stand out. Things never sound harsh, exactly, but at the end of the track, when a huge drum hit alternates back-and-forth with higher wooden percussion and brushes, the entire mix seems to exist at the extremes, and there's not as much definition or clarity in the middle. It doesn't sound bad, but it's not very accurate.

In other words, bass lovers who also favor crisp highs will probably enjoy the t-Jays Three quite a bit, while those seeking flatter response should probably consider a pair with less boosting in the lows and highs, like the MartinLogan Mikros 70. If you do like a more sculpted, boosted sound, but the lack of phone controls on the t-Jays Three is keeping you from pulling the trigger, consider a recent Editors' Choice, the TDK EB950, which offers a comparable sound signature as well as an inline remote for Apple iOS devices and some Android models. Finally, if all of these options are a bit out of your price range, the RHA MA450i is a solid choice for its considerably lower price?it can't really compete with the above-mentioned pairs in terms of audio quality, but it'll cost you less. At $100, however, the t-Jay Three is a no-frills earphone pair with booming low-end and sculpted highs; it should make bass lovers and fans of crisp vocals smile.

Ratliff's BAC was 2X limit? |??Team statement

Philadelphia Eagles v New Orleans SaintsGetty Images

Eagles running back LeSean McCoy has made headlines for his Twitter use before, but there?s a big difference between trash talking with Giants defensive end Osi Umenyiora and what happened between him and the mother of his son over the weekend.

McCoy lobbed volleys toward the woman, whose Twitter page identifies her only as Steph, in what seemed to be an argument about requests for money. USA Today has some of the tweets from McCoy?s account, which has been deleted, as well as the woman?s replies. Those replies included accusations that McCoy performed a particular sexual act to her to get out of paying child support and that McCoy?s current girlfriend had slept with one of his best friends.

McCoy originally deactivated the account by saying that his account was hacked. It?s a familiar explanation for unsavory content, but McCoy took the unusual step of admitting he made up the hacking story as part of a larger apology for the whole situation.

?In light of the recent events that played out over Twitter this past weekend, I would like to express how deeply sorry and remorseful I am to my family, the?Philadelphia Eagles, my fans, and every young person who views me as a role model. This is not who I am as a person, nor the image I ever wanted to portray of myself. It?s definitely not the example I want to set for my son,? McCoy said in a statement, via CSNPhilly.com. ?My Twitter account was not hacked. I take full responsibility and I apologize for trying to make it seem like it was not me. Due to my bad judgment and frustration, I allowed a very personal matter to be played out on a social network, of all things. It was immature and unprofessional for me to do so and to encourage others to join in.?

Anyone who follows athletes on Twitter can tell the ones who are doing it for themselves and those who are doing it with help as part of developing their ?brand.? The latter approach is boring and inauthentic, but it?s a lot less likely to get you in trouble for flying off the handle in full view of the public.

Twitter Will Run Ads In Middle East To Target ... - Business Insider

DUBAI (Reuters) - Twitter Inc launched advertising services in the Middle East and North Africa on Sunday as the social media firm seeks to exploit a tripling of its regional subscriber base following its widespread use during the Arab Spring protests.

Digital advertising is relatively undeveloped in the region, accounting for an estimated 4 percent of its total advertising spending, but a young, tech-savvy population and rising Internet penetration points to significant potential for growth.

"The two are interconnected - the rapid growth of our user base with the timing of why we want to help brands connect with that audience," said Shailesh Rao, Twitter vice-president for international operations.

Twitter does not provide a regional breakdown of its more than 200 million users worldwide, but Rao said its MENA subscriber base had tripled in the past 12 months.

The company has recruited Egypt's Connect Ads, which is ultimately owned by Cairo-listed Orascom Telecom Media and Technology, to launch advertising initially in Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, Kuwait and the United Arab Emirates.

Pepsi and Saudi telecom operator Etihad Etisalat (Mobily) are among its confirmed clients, the company said.

Twitter says the products it promotes typically have an audience response rate of 1 to 3 percent, significantly higher than traditional advertising rate of 0.1 to 0.5 percent.

"Social media advertising is totally different because it relies on what people say. It's about two-way, not one-way, communication," said Mohamed El Mehairy, Connect Ads managing director.

Jane Austen tourism booms as 'Pride and Prejudice' turns 200

5 hrs.

When a classic love story has a big birthday, it?s time to have a ball ? literally.

Monday marks the 200th anniversary of the publication of ?Pride and Prejudice,? the Jane Austen novel that introduced feisty heroine Elizabeth Bennet, seemingly aloof Mr. Darcy and a world of manor homes and grand estates that turned England into a dream destination for readers around the globe.

Balls, dances and other special events are taking place this year to celebrate the bicentennial as Austen continues to lure travelers.

?She?s hugely important,? said Meredith Pearson, a spokeswoman for VisitBritain. The country?s national tourism agency maintains a guide for fans eager to experience the "Pride and Prejudice" lifestyle.

?We found that, to this day, because of the popularity of those stories, it?s something that visitors really, really enjoy doing,? Pearson said.

Even if you haven?t read the book, chances are you?re familiar with the plot of ?Pride and Prejudice? after catching the recent film version starring Keira Knightley, seeing ?Bridget Jones? Diary????a modern reboot of the novel ? or watching the blockbuster 1995 BBC mini-series starring Colin Firth, which led to a huge surge in visitors, Pearson noted.

No wonder, then, tourism is booming along Austen?s trail in England, a path that traditionally takes visitors to the resort city of Bath, the verdant landscapes of Derbyshire and the village of Chawton.

The author lived in Bath from 1801 to 1806 and chose the city as the setting for two of her novels. Today, about 60,000 people a year flock to The Jane Austen Centre, which chronicles her Bath experience, said Jennie Rogers, general manager of the attraction.

Besides taking in the Centre?s permanent exhibition and sampling Georgian biscuits, visitors can also try on fashions from Austen?s era ? empire-waist dresses, bonnets, gloves and parasols for the ladies; waistcoats, coats and top hats for the gentlemen.

?Our visitors become overwhelmed when trying on our replica costumes,? Rogers said. ?(They) love the romance of Jane's novels and the way in which they can relate to her character's dilemmas and issues???even today.?

To celebrate the 200th anniversary of ?Pride and Prejudice,? the Centre is hosting an ?International Readathon? on Monday, when dozens of actors, authors and Austen experts will read the book aloud in its entirety during a 12-hour period.

The city of Bath has put together a suggested itinerary for Austen fans, including taking a walk along the Royal Crescent, where the author often strolled, and enjoying afternoon tea in The Pump Room, which was a popular gathering spot during Austen?s era.

If you?d like to dress up and party Austen-style, there?s the Jane Austen Festival Regency Costumed Summer Ball on June 22, which features Regency dancing???the intricate choreography that requires ladies and gentlemen to form lines and circles, and twirl around and bow to each other.

?We hope to dance Mr. Beveridge's Maggot???a dance made popular by the BBC 1995 version of ?Pride and Prejudice,?? said organizer Jackie Herring.

The novel is also the theme of this year?s Bath Jane Austen Festival, scheduled to take place Sept. 13-21, complete with a Mr. Darcy lookalike contest, a masked ball and workshops on how to perfect the Regency look.

Fans who want to stroll through grand estates and gardens featured in the novels should head to the Derbyshire region of England where many of the Austen movies and mini-series were filmed. The district maintains a list of all the locations used in the productions.

Pearson thinks U.S. visitors love the sites because they?re so uniquely British.

?It?s part of that fairly tale, in a way. Because (the U.S. is) such a young country comparatively, the fact that there are these gorgeous old manor houses and country houses ? it really takes people away and it really catches Americans? imagination,? Pearson said.

One such home is Chatsworth House, said to have inspired Pemberley, Mr. Darcy?s estate in ?Pride and Prejudice.?

To see where Austen created some of her characters, visit her former home in Chawton, now transformed into Jane Austen?s House Museum.

This is where the author spent the last eight years of her life and wrote ?Mansfield Park,? ?Emma,? and ?Persuasion.? To celebrate the 200th anniversary of ?Pride and Prejudice,? the museum is displaying first editions of the book, original illustrations and the table where Austen worked.

British tourism officials?? who are still giddy about the Queen?s Diamond Jubilee and all the other events that drew visitors to the region last year???are hoping Austen?s legacy will continue the momentum in 2013.

?It?s a great year to come over and experience all of the literary connections in the UK,? Pearson said.

Fast food linked to higher asthma and allergy risk

New study links fast-food consumption to a greater risk for developing asthma, eczema and allergies.

Tue, Jan 15 2013 at 8:56 AM

Teens and kids who eat a lot of fast food may be at greater risk for developing asthma, eczema?and allergies, according to a new study published in the British Medical Journal's respiratory magazine,?Thorax.

?

For the study, researchers from?the University of Auckland in New Zealand and the University of Nottingham in the United Kingdom looked at surveys from more than 500,000 kids in 51 countries to determine how diet affected their allergy-related risks. They found that?eating fast food three times a week may lead to asthma, eczema?and itchy, watery eyes in children. ?

?

Researchers surveyed kids and their parents to determine whether or not they experienced symptoms of allergies, asthma and eczema. Participants also shared what types of foods they consumed each week. In the study, children in their early teens who ate fast food three or more times each week had a 39 percent greater risk of severe asthma. For 6- and 7-year-olds, there was a 27 percent increased risk. Overall, kids who ate fast food three or more times a week had about a 30 percent increased risk of severe allergies. The results were consistent across all age groups regardless of gender or socioeconomic status. ?

?

Interestingly, kids who ate fruit were able to cut their risk of developing these conditions. Researchers found that kids who ate three or more portions of fruit each week reduced their risk of severe asthma, eczema and allergies by between 11 and 14 percent.

Pa. man gets drive-thru send-off after funeral

YORK, Pa. (AP) ? Mourners at a Pennsylvania fast-food fan's funeral wanted him to have it his way, so they arranged for his hearse ? and the rest of the procession ? to make one last drive-thru visit before reaching the cemetery.

David Kime Jr. "lived by his own rules," daughter Linda Phiel said. He considered the lettuce on a burger his version of healthy eating, she said.

To give him a whopper of a send-off Saturday, the funeral procession stopped at a Burger King where each mourner got a sandwich for the road.

Kime got one last burger too, the York Daily Record reported. It was placed atop his flag-draped coffin at the cemetery.

Phiel said the display wasn't a joke, rather a happy way of honoring her father and the things that brought him joy.

"He lived a wonderful life and on his own terms," she said.

Kime, 88, a World War II veteran, died Jan. 20.

Restaurant manager Margaret Hess said she knew his face and his order. She and her crew made 40 burgers for the funeral procession.

"It's nice to know he was a loyal customer up until the end ? the very end," she said.

FREE IS MY LIFE: MOVIE REVIEW: Quartet

This movie review for "Quartet" was written by guest blogger Liz Parker...

Quartet is Dustin Hoffman's directorial debut, so I had a feeling it was going to be good, as I love him as an actor and he's had a long and varied career. As a classical music fan, too, I very much enjoyed Quartet, although it definitely had some slow spots throughout.

Beecham House is home for retired musicians, all of whom love practicing their craft. The birthday of Verdi (a composer) is coming up, and the Beecham residents are preparing a big concert to celebrate. Reggie (Tom Courtenay), Wilf (Billy Connolly), and Cissy (Pauline Collins) are all opera singers who used to be very famous, actually, and they're shocked when they find out that a woman who was in their quartet, Jean (Maggie Smith), is going to be Beecham's newest resident. It's especially problematic for Reggie, who used to be married to Jean before she broke his heart many years ago. The director of the Verdi concert, though (Michael Gambon, aka Dumbledore from the Harry Potter films) knows that if they can get Jean to sing with them in their old quartet, it will draw in a huge crowd, and he pressures them to ask her, even though she's given up singing publicly.

This movie reminded me of Blue Lake, a fine arts camp I used to attend, except it was a retirement home! It looked like it would be really fun to live there, actually, aside from all the drama going on. My favorite character was actually Cissy, who is energetic and eternally optimistic; there's a scene between her and Maggie Smith where Maggie throws flowers at her that is hilarious, at least at first. Michael Gambon, missing his trademark Dumbledore beard but distinguishable by his voice and mannerisms, has a good part also, as the leader of putting together the Verdi concert, and the other two members of the quartet (Courtenay and Connolly) are great too.

Yes, see this movie. The only part that could have been better, like I mentioned before, was its slowness, but the film is humorous enough that it's easy to look past that. Kudos to Dustin Hoffman on a fantastic debut, and I hope to see more movies from him in the future.

Quartet is in theaters now and is rated PG-13 with a runtime of 98 minutes. 3.5 stars out of 5.

Stephen King writes post-Newtown essay on guns

BANGOR, Maine (AP) ? Horror writer Stephen King is seeking to provoke a discussion on gun control and gun rights following the school shooting massacre in Newtown, Conn.

The Maine native is a gun owner. He calls for three "reasonable measures" to curb gun violence in an essay titled "Guns," released Friday as a Kindle single through Amazon.

King says he wants background checks on all gun sales and bans on high-capacity magazines and military-style weapons like the rifle used in the Newtown shooting, which killed 20 children and six school officials.

King describes a pattern of mass shootings in which anger and frustration give way to political rhetoric before discussions of gun control "disappear into the legislative swamp." He says on his website: "If this helps provoke constructive debate, I've done my job."

David ShoreNo doubt here ? House creator David Shore is on his way back to primetime. ABC has handed a pilot order to Doubt, a legal drama written and executive produced by Shore. The project, from Sony TV where Shore is under a deal, centers on a former cop who?s now a cunning, but charming low-rent lawyer who uses his street smarts to work the system for his clients while battling his own demons and wooing his ex-wife.

Doubt originally landed at ABC with a pilot production commitment after heated bidding between ABC and CBS. It marks Shore?s return to his legal roots. He is a lawyer by trade and former partner at a boutique law firm in Toronto. A legal drama script, an?L.A. Law spec, landed him his first writing job on Paul Haggis? Due South. In 1996, David E. Kelley picked Shore as one of the three original writers on his hit ABC legal drama The Practice. Shore, repped by ICM, the Shuman Co. and attorney Bill Sobel, worked on two other legal dramas ? NBC?s Law & Order and CBS? Family Law,?which he ran ? before he wrote the pilot script for medical drama House, which grew into one of Fox?s biggest scripted hits ever.

December New Home Sales - Business Insider

Joe Raedle/Getty Images

Jeremy Nelson rebuilds his home after it was destroyed when a tornado hit in Joplin, Missouri.

New home sales fell 7.3 percent month-over-month to 369K.

Last month's number was revised up to 398K, for 9.3 percent.

December new home sales were up 8.8 percent from a year ago.

The median sales prices of new homes sold in December was $248,900.

The seasonally adjusted estimate of new houses for sale was 151,000, which represents a supply of 4.9 months at the current sales rate.

An estimated 367,000 new homes were sold in 2012, up 19.9 percent from a year ago.

Original

New home sales for December will be out at 10 a.m. ET.

Analysts polled by Bloomberg are looking for sales to rise to an annual rate of 385 K.

While housing has been called the only bright spot in the U.S. economy, some are concerned that new home sales haven't been as strong and could add to inventory.

Millan Mulraine at TD Securities wrote:

The new homes market has been a laggard in the overall housing market recovery, and while new homebuilding and existing home sales activity have risen significantly from their lows, new home sales have yet to enjoy a similar turnaround in fortune.

Remember decline in inventory (existing and new homes) is one of the key things propping up home prices. Moreover analysts caution about seasonality in interpreting year-end data.

"Inventory typically falls at the end of the year and picks up again in Q1 in anticipation of the spring selling season," according to Bank of America's Michelle Meyer.

New home sales measure newly constructed homes where sales have closed. Investors watch this data because it offers insight on the health of consumer and the economy.

Former Defense Secretary Robert Gates Endorses Chuck Hagel

Former Secretary of Defense Robert Gates - who served under both George W. Bush and Barack Obama - has signed on to a letter with a bi-partisan group of 12 other former top national security officials expressing his "strong endorsement" of Chuck Hagel for Secretary of Defense.

The list also includes several top national security officials for Republican presidents: Brent Scrowcroft (Bush 41), Mel Laird (Nixon), George Schultz (Reagan), Colin Powell (Reagan, Bush 41 and Bush 43), Robert McFarlane (Reagan).

It's a pretty impressive list.

Here's the letter:

--Original Message--

Today, a distinguished group of former Secretaries of State, Defense, and National Security Advisors sent the following letter to the Members of the United States Senate to strongly endorse the nomination of Chuck Hagel to be Secretary of Defense.

###

January 24, 2013

To Members of the United States Senate:

We, as former Secretaries of State, Defense, and National Security Advisors, are writing to express our strong endorsement of Chuck Hagel to be the next Secretary of Defense.

Chuck Hagel has an impeccable record of public service that reflects leadership, integrity, and a keen reading of global dynamics. From his time as Deputy Veterans Administrator managing a quarter of a million employees during the Reagan presidency, to turning around the financially troubled World USO, to shepherding the post-9/11 GI Bill into law as a United States Senator, and most recently through his service on the Defense Policy Board at the Pentagon and as co-Chairman of the President's Intelligence Advisory Board, Chuck Hagel is uniquely qualified to meet the challenges facing the Department of Defense and our men and women in uniform. As President Obama noted in announcing the nomination, this twice-wounded combat veteran "is a champion of our troops and our veterans and our military families" and would have the distinction of being the first person of enlisted rank and the first Vietnam veteran to serve as Secretary of Defense.

His approach to national security and debates about the use of American power is marked by a disciplined habit of thoughtfulness that is sorely needed and these qualities will serve him well as Secretary of Defense at a time when the United States must address a range of international issues that are unprecedented in scope. Our extensive experience working with Senator Hagel over the years has left us confident that he has the necessary background to succeed in the job of leading the largest federal agency.

Hagel has declared that we "knew we needed the world's best military not because we wanted war but because we wanted to prevent war." For those of us honored to have served as members of a president's national security team, Senator Hagel clearly understands the essence and the burdens of leadership required of this high office. We hope this Committee and the U.S. Senate will promptly and favorably act on his nomination.

Sincerely,

Hon. Madeleine Albright, former Secretary of State

Hon. Samuel Berger, former National Security Advisor

Hon. Harold Brown, former Secretary of Defense

Hon. Zbigniew Brzezinski, former National Security Advisor

Hon. William Cohen, former Secretary of Defense

Hon. Robert Gates, former Secretary of Defense

Hon. James Jones, former National Security Advisor

Hon. Melvin Laird, former Secretary of Defense

Hon. Robert McFarlane, former National Security Advisor

Hon. William Perry, former Secretary of Defense

Hon. Colin Powell, former Secretary of State and National Security Advisor

Hon. George Shultz, former Secretary of State

Hon. Brent Scowcroft, former National Security Advisor

Ex-Polish church head, Cardinal Glemp, dies at 83

WARSAW, Poland (AP) ? Cardinal Jozef Glemp, the longtime head of Poland's influential Roman Catholic church who helped lead the nation peacefully through martial law and the fight against communism, has died. He was 83.

Church authorities said Glemp died Wednesday evening in Warsaw. He had been ill for many years, and the Polish news agency PAP said he had lung cancer.

Warsaw Archbishop Cardinal Kazimierz Nycz said Glemp was a leader "in a difficult time" through which he led the church with prudence and wisdom.

A lawyer by education, Glemp was appointed primate of Poland's Roman Catholic church in the tempestuous, yet hope-filled year of 1981. That was the heyday of the Solidarity freedom movement, when the nation openly opposed the communist authorities with massive strikes and when the threat of a communist clampdown and even Soviet intervention was mounting.

Initially, he seemed to lose face in the public eye in comparison with his predecessor, Cardinal Stefan Wyszynski, a stalwart opponent of Poland's Communist regime. But for Glemp, the main goal was to avoid confrontation with the regime and prevent bloodshed.

He was criticized for his conciliatory tactics, but they helped the Poles save lives and go mostly peacefully through 18 months of harsh military rule imposed in December 1981 and through Poland's isolation and want of the 1980s. Under his guidance, the church offered spiritual and material support to Solidarity activists and dissidents, many of whom lost their jobs. He supported Solidarity leader, Lech Walesa, who won the 1983 Nobel Peace Prize for advocacy of freedom.

Glemp's calm also disarmed the bitterness and anger that rose in Poland after the secret security abducted and murdered a pro-Solidarity priest, Jerzy Popieluszko, in 1984.

As primate, Glemp played an active role in helping end communism in Poland, when church authorities initiated and guaranteed the fairness of political negotiations between Solidarity and the weakening communists in 1988 and 1989. The Communist regime ended peacefully through free elections in 1989.

A clever political strategist, Glemp was a conservative religious leader. In the 1980s he opposed Jewish demands to have a female convent ?and its cross? moved from near Auschwitz, the former Nazi German death camp, considered by Jews to be the largest cemetery of Holocaust victims. His reluctance, before he finally obeyed orders from Polish-born Pope John Paul II, earned him the label of anti-Semite in much of the world.

Under Poland's young democracy and its painful transformation to a market economy, Glemp stressed the need to protect ordinary people who were losing jobs by the tens of thousands. He also campaigned to protect the Catholic faith, which for centuries was a defining feature for the Polish people.

Glemp remained the head of the Polish bishops' conference until 2004, and retained the title of primate, the top leader, until 2009.

His years of leadership largely coincided with the papacy of the Polish-born Pope John Paul II, who was elected pope in 1979 and died in 2005, and whose words and first visit to Poland as pope in 1979 had inspired the Solidarity movement.

Three days of funeral ceremonies will begin Saturday and the burial will take place Monday at St. John's Arch Cathedral in Warsaw, Nycz said.

Cameron to EU: don't force political union

(Reuters) - British Prime Minister David Cameron told European leaders on Thursday that any attempt to force countries into ever-deeper political union was a mistake that Britain would not be part of.

Cameron's comments at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland came a day after he promised Britons a vote on quitting the European Union, saying the country would hold a referendum on its membership by the end of 2017 if he wins the next election.

His words were among his most combative to an international audience on the future direction of the EU, but were also designed to reassure EU states and investors that Britain had no intention of turning its back on the EU, despite the planned referendum and the uncertainty it has generated.

"Countries in Europe have their histories, their traditions, their institutions, want their own sovereignty, their ability to make their own choices, and to try and shoehorn countries into a centralised political union would be a great mistake for Europe, and Britain wouldn't be part of it," he said in a speech.

Britain wanted to reform the EU from the inside for its own benefit and for the benefit of the bloc's other 26 members, Cameron said, adding he believed the EU had to reorient itself.

"Britain is a major European player on all of the issues where Europe needs to act - being more competitive, fighting terrorism, combating climate change - we are right out there leading the arguments, making the arguments.

"And that is the sort of political action that we need. But a centralised political union? Not for me, not for Britain."

As the euro zone navigates its debt crisis and eyes closer integration, Cameron has said he wants Britain to repatriate certain powers.

"YES PRIME MINISTER"

Back in Britain, voters and the media were digesting what many commentators said was a historic Europe speech by Cameron the previous day.

The mass-selling Sun tabloid played up comments by German Chancellor Angela Merkel who said after his speech that she was ready to discuss Cameron's EU ideas, suggesting it was an important victory for the British premier.

"Top Merks", read its headline, a pun on the German politician's surname. It also published a YouGov poll which showed 63 percent of Britons backed Cameron's referendum idea and its own online poll in which 68 percent of respondents said they thought Britain should leave the EU.

The Daily Mail also gave Cameron favourable coverage, running a headline that simply stated: "Yes, Prime Minister! (Now go on and finish the job, Mr Cameron)."

Other newspapers were more sceptical, wondering if Cameron had begun a process he would be unable to control.

Some British business leaders have warned that Cameron's plan to stage a referendum by the end of 2017 - contingent on him winning the next election in 2015 - is likely to lead to investors delaying important decisions about Britain.

But a letter in The Times, penned by 48 industry and finance leaders, suggested business was split on the issue.

The letter endorsed Cameron's strategy, saying it was "good for business and good for jobs in Britain" and arguing it was the right time to try to cut the amount of red tape coming out of Brussels and to complete the bloc's single market.

Back in Davos, EU leaders gave a mixed reaction to Cameron's ideas about how to reform the bloc. Speaking on a panel, Dutch Prime Minister Marc Rutte expressed the strongest support for Cameron's aim of repatriating some EU powers to member states and of pressing Europe to complete its internal market.

"Precisely because Europe and the world is changing, we need to have this debate about subsidiarity, about which tasks should be made by 27 and which tasks at national level," Rutte said.

But he voiced doubts about whether powers could be clawed back, saying: "You can never repatriate powers from the European to the national level."

Irish Prime Minister Enda Kenny told the same panel he felt there was, for now, no way of reopening negotiations about EU treaty change - a process Cameron hopes to use to repatriate powers - and that even if there was, such a process should focus on closer integration.

Italian Prime Minister Mario Monti praised Cameron's focus on completing Europe's single market, but also said there might not be an opportunity for Britain to seek to repatriate powers. "Pragmatism should be the British state of mind, without too much ideology," said Monti.

Kennedy-Lawford takes clan's advocacy mantle, on addiction

Top Line

Christopher Kennedy Lawford, nephew of President John F. Kennedy and Sen. Ted Kennedy, is calling for improvements in the nation's treatment of addiction and mental illness in a new book.

"We've de-institutionalized the mentally ill in this country, our treatment now is in prisons and on the streets, and it's not working, " says Lawford, author of Recover to Live: Conversations with 100 of the World's Top Treatment Experts.

Lawford is no stranger to addiction. Not only did he once struggle with a substance abuse himself, but he watched his cousin, former Congressman Patrick Kennedy, D-R.I., publicly battle with addiction during his time in Congress. Patrick Kennedy wrote the forward for the book.

"My cousin Patrick talks about a check up from the neck up; we need to start treating mental illness the way we treat physical illness. Get it early, get it fast, pay attention to it as a society," Lawford says. "Otherwise, we're going to suffer the consequences."

Lawford says he is proud to carry on the Kennedy legacy of advocacy, saying that his uncle, the late Sen. Ted Kennedy, D-Mass., "would be very mad at me if I turned my back" on this issue.

A senate seat in Massachusetts is about to open up, and there is a lot of talk of Victoria Reggie Kennedy, Sen. Kennedy?s widow, filling the post on a temporary basis.

?It always good to have a presence in Washington,? says Lawford. ?I love to see members of my family down here.?

To hear more about Lawford's advice for dealing with addictions, and to learn what Norman Mailer once said of the author, check out this week's Top Line.

Torrey Pines a good gauge for Tiger

SAN DIEGO (AP) ? Based on his record alone, there could be cause for alarm the way Tiger Woods started his season.

Woods never finished out of the top 10 in his season opener until his 13th season, when he was coming off reconstructive surgery on his left knee and was eliminated in the second round of the Match Play Championship.

He was eliminated on the second day of the Abu Dhabi Championship in memorable fashion ? a late rally to seemingly make the cut with one shot to spare, only to be informed that he was not supposed to get relief from an imbedded lie in sandy soil on the fifth hole. Two shots were added to his score, and Woods was on his way back with only the 10th missed cut of his career, his first outside the PGA Tour and a bad start to the year.

The more important measure, however, is this week at Torrey Pines.

Woods has won seven times as a pro on this track along the Pacific bluffs. It's a public course, but it feels as if he owns it. Such is his dominance at Torrey Pines that after the first round of the 2008 Buick Invitational, when Woods opened with a 67 on the South Course, a caddie standing behind the 18th green said, "He just won two tournaments with one round." Sure enough, Woods won that week by eight shots, and then won the U.S. Open that summer on a mangled knee in a playoff.

That was his 14th ? and at the moment, his last ? major championship.

That also was his last win at Torrey Pines.

He didn't play in 2009 because he was still recovering from knee surgery. He didn't play in 2010 because he was recovering from the humiliating collapse in his personal life. The last time he played Torrey Pines was in 2011, which turned out to be the worst season of his career. He was embarking on a brand new swing, his game was a wreck and it showed. Woods went 74-75 on the weekend and tied for 44th.

Where is he now?

"It's nice to be healthy, to be able to train and practice and do all of the things that I know I can do," Woods said Tuesday after playing the back nine on the South Course. "It's definitely a very different feeling, so it's nice to be back. It's nice to get out there and play a course that I know."

When it comes to horses for courses, Woods is a thoroughbred at Torrey Pines. The only course comparable to his success level at Torrey would be Firestone, where he also has won seven times and never finished out of the top 10 until 2010 and 2011, both times when his game was a mess. He has won seven times at Bay Hill, but that's different from the other two because Woods has seven finishes out of the top 10. Bay Hill always has been feast or famine.

"This has always been a pretty good benchmark, hasn't it?" Geoff Ogilvy said.

If he doesn't win this week, it certainly wouldn't be a disaster. Woods is getting older, and the competition is getting deeper every year. Winning is not as easy as it was.

But how he plays this week could be a fair measure of his game going into a pivotal year when the balance of power has shifted to 23-year-old Rory McIlroy. Woods talks a lot about the courses where he feels most comfortable, with Torrey Pines and Firestone at the top of his list. He also includes Augusta National and St. Andrews.

Most telling was his last win at Torrey Pines.

He was runner-up at the Masters that year, and then had arthroscopic surgery to repair some cartilage damage in his left knee that caused him to miss Quail Hollow and The Players Championship. He was getting ready for the U.S. Open when doctors found two stress fractures of the left tibia and recommended six weeks off, which he ignored.

So when he showed up at Torrey Pines, the opening round was the first time he had walked 18 holes since the final at the Masters.

Of his 14 majors, this was among the most remarkable, foremost because of the injury.

"Here I am just talking about it and my hands are sweating just thinking about the feeling I had to get through each and every day," Woods said Tuesday. "Just trying to get up and having to warm up again and go to the gym. I just don't want to move. Then having to get out here and warm up and trying not to show you guys and any of my competitors what I was feeling. It was a very difficult week."

But it was at Torrey Pines.

Could he have won the U.S. Open in that kind of physical shape had it been played anywhere else?

"Yeah," he said.

But did it help that it was Torrey Pines?

"Yeah, definitely. Probably those three courses I just mentioned," he said, referring to Torrey, Firestone and Augusta.

Woods won a Junior World Championship at Torrey Pines as a teenager. He first came to the course with his father for the Andy Williams Invitational, spending most of his time watching the California players ? Mark O'Meara, John Cook, Corey Pavin. He recalled seeing Andy Bean reach the par-5 18th in two shots.

It's different now. The world watches him. That much was evident when he finished the 18th hole of a practice round on a cool, quiet morning. The golf course, which had been so quiet, came to life with a few hundred rushing over to a walkway with hopes of an autograph, and the pounding of steps heard on a bridge as two dozen photographers trampled behind him.

McIlroy is taking the next month off. The field at Torrey Pines includes Dustin Johnson, Masters champion Bubba Watson, defending champion Brandt Snedeker, Keegan Bradley and Phil Mickelson. But it's still Torrey Pines. This is where a healthy and happy Woods is usually at his best.
