Architectural aberration. Restless jumble. The most bizarre skyscraper of the 19th century. Amazingly ornate. Beautiful.

No single building in Philadelphia has had so many detractors and admirers as the Hale Building. Built in 1887 by Willis Hale at 1326 Chestnut St., the building is a hodgepodge of Victorian architecture mixed with highly ornate Gothic stylings.

Hale built hundreds of buildings around Philadelphia, including the Divine Lorraine Hotel on Broad Street, The Powelton and the third Central High School, where Philly?s brightest public school students attended high school from 1900 to 1939. But most of his buildings were torn down in disgust at his audacity to take variety to its extreme.

He was highly praised in his lifetime, but styles changed quickly back then. His work was declared horrific before he was even in the ground and he died penniless. But perhaps even more bizarre than the building itself is the story behind the structure?s first tenant, Gideon Marsh.

Marsh was the president of Keystone National Bank. In 1891, several bank runs had taken place on the institution, leaving it in a dire state. City Treasurer John Bardsley instituted his own mini-bailout of the bank, loaning it several thousand dollars. But he was drawing interest on the loans for his own profit and helping Marsh loot the institution.

On March 20, 1891, the bank?s doors closed and the public was stunned. It still had depositors and creditors who held money there. Or so they thought. This was before the days of the FDIC, so their money was as good as gone, as was Marsh after William Wanamaker, brother of the famous John Wanamaker, posted bail for him.

For seven and a half years he wandered the world a vagrant. He left Philadelphia with about $1,400 he collected from two of his debtors and found his way to Brazil. Not much is known other than that he ended up in Washington state doing odd jobs. Finally, after tiring of looking over his shoulder, he turned himself in in 1898. And he did so in style?he was hiding in plain sight at the Waldorf-Astoria in New York City.

For the next four-odd years, his home was the Eastern State Penitentiary. He was pardoned by Theodore Roosevelt and released on Christmas Eve 1902. But the Keystone Bank was finished and went back to being the Hale Building. Since then, it?s been a neighbor to the Garrick Theatre, which was connected to it in the early 1900s. It?s been various storefronts, home to Drucker?s Bellevue Bathhouse and Sauna in the 1970s and 1980s, and is now all but abandoned. It still wears the mask of the shoe store that took over its street floor in the 1960s, but the last tenant to occupy that space, a discount store called Valu Plus, closed last year.

In 2010, Developer Alon Barzilay and architects JKR Partners proposed converting the long-neglected property into a boutique hotel and restaurant, promising to restore the majority of the building?s ornate masonry exterior but replacing the current 1960s-era storefront with a contemporary glass entryway. After several redesigns, the Philadelphia Historical Commission approved the design in concept, but the developer must submit another design with slight modifications before any work begins.

But that was two years ago, and just like the Hale, the plans seem to be forgotten and are being ignored?for now.

With the widespread use of asbestos in all branches of the US military between the 1930?s to 1970?s, veterans are now one of the high risk populations for mesothelioma. This serious disease is an uncommon and aggressive form of cancer, which is often deadly.

Mesothelioma results from exposure to asbestos and affects the chest, abdominal and cardiac areas of the body. The major types of this cancer are pleural that affects the lungs and chest, peritoneal, affecting the abdomen and pericardial, the heart. Mesothelioma symptoms do not usually occur until about 20 ? 50 years after exposure, resulting in significant damage and late diagnosis. Although incurable, the prognosis of this disease is encouraging with treatments such as surgery, chemotherapy, radiation or combination therapies.

Due to the excellent fire and heat-resistant properties, asbestos was a popular material used in several military applications, including construction, maintenance and demolition of equipment, machinery and buildings.

Installations such as bases and shipyards and operations on the battlefield were major sites for contact with asbestos. This led to many veterans who served in the Army, Navy, Marines or Air Force during the 19th century being at high risk of developing mesothelioma. • Worked in or spent extended time at base housing facilities.

Before the late 1970?s, many veterans were unknowingly exposed to asbestos during service in the US military. This resulted in mesothelioma many years later. Due to the high-risk exposure faced by veterans, mesothelioma became a recognizable medical condition that is related to military service and qualifies for Veterans Affairs benefits. It is important that veterans be aware of mesothelioma risks and treatments to help improve the prognosis of this rare and aggressive cancer.

AKRON, Ohio (AP) ? A man suspected of calmly walking into a hospital's intensive care unit and shooting his wife in the head in what may have been a mercy killing appeared perplexed at the attempted murder charge against him when he stood before a judge Tuesday, asking whether his wife was indeed dead.

Hours later, a medical examiner issued a report ruling the woman's death from the gunshot wound a homicide, clearing the way for prosecutors to consider more serious charges in the shooting of his wife of 45 years.

John Wise, 66, with a full white beard, appeared before an Akron Municipal Court judge via video from jail on an aggravated attempted murder charge. His bond was set at $1 million. He is due back for arraignment Wednesday morning.

Wise, who lived with his wife in Massillon, is charged with shooting his wife, Barbara, at her bedside in the ICU unit of Akron General Medical Center on Saturday. The 65-year-old woman died the next morning.

Wise surrendered to hospital security after the shooting and has cooperated with investigators.

A 911 call recording released Tuesday indicates some people at the hospital initially thought the gunshot sound in a patient's room might be an oxygen tank and went in to investigate, only to find a man dressed in black. He was sitting and appeared to be handling a gun.

"We couldn't figure it out. We all went in the room because we thought it came from there. We thought it was an oxygen tank," a woman who reported the shooting told a dispatcher. "Then we saw him sitting there with a gun, and he was like, you know, loading it or whatever."

She said she had gone to hide in a room down the hall but could hear a commotion, with people yelling and running nearby. Then the caller apparently abandoned the call after telling the dispatcher "I think someone's coding or something" and saying she needed to go help.

Another caller from hospital security confirmed to a dispatcher that a patient had been shot.

Wise apparently was confused about the attempted murder charge Tuesday, asking, "Is she not dead?"

Visiting Judge Marvin Shapiro didn't answer his question but said Wise would soon have an attorney who could. "We're going to get you an attorney who will be able to answer all of your questions for you, sir," Shapiro told him.

Messages were left Tuesday with Andrea Whitaker, who was listed as Wise's attorney in court records filed after the court appearance.

Police said Barbara Wise had been in critical condition in the ICU for several days, but details of her illness haven't been made public.

Emergency personnel responded to the Wises' home a week before the shooting for a medical call that involved advanced life support, including oxygen and a heart monitor. Hospital and emergency officials have said they can't disclose any information about patients because of privacy rules.

Akron police Capt. Dan Zampelli said officials are looking into whether Wise shot his wife in a mercy killing.

Wise entered the hospital through the main entrance and went up to his wife's room without drawing any attention, apparently keeping the handgun concealed, hospital spokesman Jim Gosky said.

Hospital security officers ran from the ground floor's emergency department to the ICU's third floor after an alert sounded that someone had a weapon, Gosky said. A distinctive popping sound drew a physician's attention to respond, too.

The Wises lived in Massillon, 25 miles south of Akron. No one has answered the door at their brick bungalow, and messages have been left with family members.

Neighbor Crystal Maxhimer, who lives two houses away, said she knew the couple only in passing. She said she frequently saw them working on their yard together.
