But Help Is on the Way - Dr. Kathleen T. Ruddy's Breast Cancer Blog

Siege,?Webster?s?definition: ?the act or process of surrounding and attacking a fortified place in such a way as to isolate it from help and supplies for the purpose of lessening the resistance of the defenders and thereby making capture possible.

There?s not a more apt description of metastasis to be found in any textbook of medicine. ?A state of siege is so apropos of what the breast cancer patient faces; but reinforcements for the defense may be on their way!

BACKGROUND: Breast cancer may erupt in errant cells in the breast, quite possibly due to (in many cases) a virus. ? However, the real threat imposed by this malignancy does not issue from the tumor that grows in the breast, but from the terrorist colonies it seeds elsewhere in the body ? that is, metastasis.

Good news: ?a woman from Australia heads the calvary on its way to help

Dr. Belinda Parker of Melbourne compared the genetic profile of cancer cells taken from the primary tumor, located in the breast, and cancer cells taken from metastasis seeded into the bone from those primary tumors. ?She wanted to compare these two groups of cancer cells to see if she could identify any genetic changes that might provide clues as to how and why those primary tumor cells were able to escape the immune system and set up shop in bone.

BACKGROUND: ?Scientists have known for?decades?that primary tumors and their metastatic offspring differ in many respects. ?Often, metastatic cells appear more primitive, behave more aggressively, and are typically more difficult to kill. ?Too, their receptors tend to change: ?what may have begun in the breast as slow-growing, Grade I, estrogen-positive tumors can easily morph into fast-growing, Grade III, estrogen-negative metastasis.

You see, cancer cells never stop tryng to adapt. ?It?s their mission to live forever, stay ahead of the game, and keep well in front of the soldiers sent to fight them ? surgeons, medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, and the like.

OK, back to our good woman in Australia, Dr. Parker.

So, when she examined the two sets of cancer cells, those from primary tumors and those from tumors metastatic to bone, she found one gene in particular,?Irf-7, that had been eliminated from primary tumor cells compared to those metastatic to bone.

Hmmm. ?What does?Irf-7?do?

Well, that?s the gene that regulates interferon.

Oh, yeah. ?Remind me again, what does interferon do?

Yeah, it allows the body to recognize foreign invaders ? evil cells that want to penetrate your fortress. ?Actually, interferon is made by specific white blood cells in the body ? think of them as your ?National Guard?. ?Typically, interferon is used to ferret out viruses. Hmmm, that?s interesting if it?s true that 40-70% of breast cancer is caused by a virus? but back to Parker ?

So, Parker discovered that breast cancer cells that had set up shop in bone were able to escape immune surveillance because they had eliminated?Irf-7.

Then Parker tried to repair the damage.

She took the metastatic breast cancer cells that she?d isolated from the bone of women with metastatic breast cancer ?. you see, she moved from her discovery in mice right to the bedside where she could do the most good ?. and she inserted the missing?Irf-7?gene back inside the cells.

Guess what? ?Once?Irf-7?was put back into the metastatic cancer cells, the immune system started wiping them out again.

Parker examined metastatic breast cells taken from?800?patients: ?her experiments with replacing the missing?Irf-7?prolonged survival and decreased the likelihood of bone metastasis.

Parker was also able to achieve similar results just by exposing the metastatic cells to interferon; thus administering Interferon is a therapeutic alternative worth testing.

Thank you, Dr. Parker.

Tech Stocks to Invest in For the Next 10 Years :: The Market Oracle ...

How today's top 5 Forex trading opportunities

Companies / Tech Stocks Jul 27, 2012 - 10:46 AM

By: Money_Morning

Companies

Best Financial Markets Analysis ArticleG.S. Early writes: During the great Dotcom days, analysts were fond of saying that "growth is the new income." Back then, tech stocks were all the rage.

Some even went as far to say that if a tech stock didn't have a triple digit price/earnings ratio, it wasn't worth buying. There were even 70 year-olds at the time who bragged about the optical networking stocks they owned - but couldn't program the clock on their VCRs.

That didn't end so well....did it?

But it's been a long time since the Dotcom crash. Twelve years later, tech stocks are stronger than ever.

The trick is to find good companies with good ideas that can translate their core competencies into niches that complement each other.

That way, when one niche falters, the others pick up the slack.

Alternatively, winning tech stocks need to dominate their sector with quality goods, innovative leadership and a dynamic corporate structure. They also have to have proprietary technologies that can keep pace with a rapidly changing marketplace.

If you rest on your laurels these days, it can mean ruination, no matter what size company you are or how much market share you own.

If you doubt that, consider this....

Just five years ago, Research in Motion's (Nasdaq: RIMM) Blackberry was the pinnacle of smartphone technology; now it's listing heavily and may eventually sink. And at one point, Nokia (NYSE: NOK) was the largest mobile phone maker in the world. Now it's become an also-ran. The list goes on and on.

Innovation Is Essential for Tech Stocks
These days, I'm a firm believer in what I call Innovation Investing. In the 21st century, I think this approach is essential.

Investors need to find innovators (big and small) that can build a unique product and know how to get it to market and manage the business.

The future becomes the present very quickly these days and flexible, forward-looking companies that can get the technologies from "lab to fab" (i.e., from the research stage into the product pipeline) quickly will become the ones to thrive in the years to come.

I was talking about this concept a few years back with an executive of a small nanotech firm and he agreed wholeheartedly.

He later confessed he was the former head of research and development at Motorola in early to mid-'90s and his department would invent incredible stuff. The problem was they couldn't get it into production quickly enough.

It's why my two favorites featured below are large tech firms that have the reach and the vision to take advantage of the incredibly fast-paced business environment.

And while I give kudos to Apple Inc. (Nasdaq: AAPL) for moving personal computing as far as it has, the odds are slim that it will lead us into the next generation.

Don't get me wrong, it's a great company with great products. But you can't believe Apple has the only visionaries in the consumer tech space. What's more, given how far they come you have to wonder how much more they can really grow.

Tech Stocks Beyond Cupertino
On the topic of consumer tech, one of my top tech stock picks is Qualcomm Inc. (Nasdaq: QCOM). It is the leading provider of mobile chipsets in the world - and it's a U.S. company.

The thing about QCOM that sets it apart from, say AAPL, is that its chipsets can be found in all mobile phones, tablets, smart grids, modems, 3G/4G networking equipment and..., well you get the point. QCOM works with virtually every phone and device maker.

What's more, QCOM's growth is just beginning since commercial and consumer users increasingly rely on mobile computing and communications.

And while AAPL would have to come up with the new cool device, QCOM just needs to stick to innovating on the chip side so it can continue sell across the entire marketplace.

And talk about innovation. The company just signed a deal with French carmaker Renault to jointly develop wireless charging technologies for electric vehicles.

The company's 3Q revenue was up 28% year-over-year; device sales were up 31%; and operating income was up 24%.

While these numbers are strong given the state of the general economy, the thing to bear in mind is, quarter-to-quarter the stock can have hiccups.

But long term, and that's what we're talking about here, the stock looks extremely promising. Even in the face of a global meltdown, the stock up over 32% over the last five years.

The stock also kicks off a 1.7% dividend as well.

Making Everything Better
My other favorite long-term tech stock is BASF (BASFY). I like to think of this company as the DuPont of the 21st century.

DuPont spent much of the 20th century building upon pioneering chemistry and developing a global reputation for innovation that became so ingrained in everyone's lives that its influence was hardly assumed more than noticed.

To steal a line from one my colleagues, Dr. Tim Harper of Cientifica, nanotechnology is to the 21st century what chemistry was to the 20th century. And without fanfare or marketing hype, BASF has incorporated this technology into every aspect of its business.

The company is actually one of the world's leading patent holders in nanotechnologies. And it gives BASF's entire product portfolio an edge in staying on the vanguard.

Nanotechnologies allow researchers to manipulate materials down to the molecular and even atomic level. That means scientists can custom build substances to enhance the way they work in materials or other substances.

It means you can build a water-based paint with no toxic fumes that is as durable as an oil-based paint. Or building "smart" insulating properties into housing materials that keep the house warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer. And that is just the beginning.

Plus, it kicks off a nice 4.9% dividend. In my mind, that makes BASF buy below $73 as a great long-term growth stock posing as a great total return play.

Steam store reveals a handful of new categories, hints at nongaming app possibilities

Steam's Android app has thrown up a selection of new categories that point to the possibility of productivity apps and other types of non-gaming software being sold in the near-future. Ranging from photo editing to accounting, there's ten categories that aren't available on the desktop version. It would open up yet another branch for Valve, which already offers books and movies through its online store, but until these categories get fleshed-out -- they're currently empty -- we're left guessing as to what it's likely to offer.

By Sandy Bubar, AP

Stubbs lies on a tarp in an alley in Talkeetna, Alaska, on Wednesday.

The part-Manx cat clawed his way onto the political scene of Talkeetna, Alaska, through a write-in campaign shortly after he was born 15 years ago.

KTUU-TV reported Friday that residents didn't like the mayoral candidates years ago, so they encouraged enough people to elect Stubbs as a write-in candidate. The town has nearly 900 residents.

Although his position is honorary, Stubbs' popularity is real. His election earned him enough press to catapult the town at the base of Mount McKinley into a tourist destination.

Residents say they're happy that their stubby-tailed mayor is promoting tourism. The general store where Stubbs hangs out says it gets dozens of tourists a day asking for him.

Nexus 7 tablet hitting a few lucky hands already

Nexus 7

The launch of the Nexus 7 Android tablet has been, at best, a little muddy. The listing on Google Play still has it shipping in 1 to 2 weeks. Some retailers apparently have been told to sit on their stock. Gamestop apparently isn't one of them. We've gotten numerous tips that folks are being told to head in and pick up their preorders, and one such lucky person is Captain Crossbones on Twitter. (Great name, btw.)

So, yep. There's the Nexus 7 tablet. The cool kids are getting them. Those who ordered directly from Google are still waiting. And, yes, that's a bit bassackwards.

But you all can have one thing in common: Read our full Nexus 7 review and head over to our Nexus 7 forums pronto, to see what all the fuss is about.

Salam, who belongs to a minority Muslim sect , helped develop the theoretical framework that led physicists to discover the ?God particle? this week, stoking worldwide excitement, yet he is not celebrated by his country and schoolchildren are rarely even taught his name.(AP Photo)

(AP) ? The pioneering work of Abdus Salam, Pakistan's only Nobel laureate, helped lead to the apparent discovery of the subatomic "God particle" last week. But the late physicist is no hero at home, where his name has been stricken from school textbooks.

Praise within Pakistan for Salam, who also guided the early stages of the country's nuclear program, faded decades ago as Muslim fundamentalists gained power. He belonged to the Ahmadi sect, which has been persecuted by the government and targeted by Taliban militants who view its members as heretics.

Their plight ? along with that of Pakistan's other religious minorities, such as Shiite Muslims, Christians and Hindus ? has deepened in recent years as hardline interpretations of Islam have gained ground and militants have stepped up attacks against groups they oppose. Most Pakistanis are Sunni Muslims.

Salam, a child prodigy born in 1926 in what was to become Pakistan after the partition of British-controlled India, won more than a dozen international prizes and honors. In 1979, he was co-winner of the Nobel Prize for his work on the so-called Standard Model of particle physics, which theorizes how fundamental forces govern the overall dynamics of the universe. He died in 1996.

Salam and Steven Weinberg, with whom he shared the Nobel Prize, independently predicted the existence of a subatomic particle now called the Higgs boson, named after a British physicist who theorized that it endowed other particles with mass, said Pervez Hoodbhoy, a Pakistani physicist who once worked with Salam. It is also known as the "God particle" because its existence is vitally important toward understanding the early evolution of the universe.

Physicists in Switzerland stoked worldwide excitement Wednesday when they announced they have all but proven the particle's existence. This was done using the world's largest atom smasher at the European Organization for Nuclear Research, or CERN, near Geneva.

"This would be a great vindication of Salam's work and the Standard Model as a whole," said Khurshid Hasanain, chairman of the physics department at Quaid-i-Azam University in Islamabad.

In the 1960s and early 1970s, Salam wielded significant influence in Pakistan as the chief scientific adviser to the president, helping to set up the country's space agency and institute for nuclear science and technology. Salam also assisted in the early stages of Pakistan's effort to build a nuclear bomb, which it eventually tested in 1998.

Salam's life, along with the fate of the 3 million other Ahmadis in Pakistan, drastically changed in 1974 when parliament amended the constitution to declare that members of the sect were not considered Muslims under Pakistani law.

Ahmadis believe their spiritual leader, Hadrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad, who died in 1908, was a prophet of God ? a position rejected by the government in response to a mass movement led by Pakistan's major Islamic parties. Islam considers Muhammad the last prophet and those who subsequently declared themselves prophets as heretics.

All Pakistani passport applicants must sign a section saying the Ahmadi faith's founder was an "impostor" and his followers are "non-Muslims." Ahmadis are prevented by law in Pakistan from "posing as Muslims," declaring their faith publicly, calling their places of worship mosques or performing the Muslim call to prayer. They can be punished with prison and even death.

Salam resigned from his government post in protest following the 1974 constitutional amendment and eventually moved to Europe to pursue his work. In Italy, he created a center for theoretical physics to help physicists from the developing world.

Although Pakistan's then-president, Gen. Zia ul-Haq, presented Salam with Pakistan's highest civilian honor after he won the Nobel Prize, the general response in the country was muted. The physicist was celebrated more enthusiastically by other nations, including Pakistan's archenemy, India.

Despite his achievements, Salam's name appears in few textbooks and is rarely mentioned by Pakistani leaders or the media. By contrast, fellow Pakistani physicist A.Q. Khan, who played a key role in developing the country's nuclear bomb and later confessed to spreading nuclear technology to Iran, North Korea and Libya, is considered a national hero. Khan is a Muslim.

Officials at Quaid-i-Azam University had to cancel plans for Salam to lecture about his Nobel-winning theory when Islamist student activists threatened to break the physicist's legs, said his colleague Hoodbhoy.

"The way he has been treated is such a tragedy," said Hoodbhoy. "He went from someone who was revered in Pakistan, a national celebrity, to someone who could not set foot in Pakistan. If he came, he would be insulted and could be hurt or even killed."

The president who honored Salam would later go on to intensify persecution of Ahmadis, for whom life in Pakistan has grown even more precarious. Taliban militants attacked two mosques packed with Ahmadis in Lahore in 2010, killing at least 80 people.

"Many Ahmadis have received letters from fundamentalists since the 2010 attacks threatening to target them again, and the government isn't doing anything," said Qamar Suleiman, a spokesman for the Ahmadi community.

For Salam, not even death saved him from being targeted.

Hoodbhoy said his body was returned to Pakistan in 1996 after he died in Oxford, England, and was buried under a gravestone that read "First Muslim Nobel Laureate." A local magistrate ordered that the word "Muslim" be erased.

George Zimmerman asks for new judge again

(AP) ? The ex-neighborhood watch volunteer charged with killing Trayvon Martin is again asking for a new judge.

George Zimmerman filed a motion Friday asking that Circuit Judge Ken Lester be disqualified from the case.

Zimmerman says Lester's comments in a bond order led him to believe Lester is prejudiced against him. The judge said in the order that Zimmerman and his wife misled him about their finances.

Zimmerman also says he can't get a fair trial with Lester presiding over the case.

Zimmerman is charged with second-degree murder. He has pleaded not guilty, claiming self-defense.

Zimmerman asked for a new judge after he was charged in April, claiming there was a potential conflict of interest with the judge.

His request was granted and the case was turned over to Lester.

Auditors say billions likely wasted in Iraq work

(AP) ? After years of following the paper trail of $51 billion in U.S. taxpayer dollars provided to rebuild a broken Iraq, the U.S. government can say with certainty that too much was wasted. But it can't say how much.

In what it called its final audit report, the Office of the Special Inspector General for Iraq Reconstruction Funds on Friday spelled out a range of accounting weaknesses that put "billions of American taxpayer dollars at risk of waste and misappropriation" in the largest reconstruction project of its kind in U.S. history.

"The precise amount lost to fraud and waste can never be known," the report said.

The auditors found huge problems accounting for the huge sums, but one small example of failure stood out: A contractor got away with charging $80 for a pipe fitting that its competitor was selling for $1.41. Why? The company's billing documents were reviewed sloppily by U.S. contracting officers or were not reviewed at all.

With dry understatement, the inspector general said that while he couldn't pinpoint the amount wasted, it "could be substantial."

Asked why the exact amount squandered can never be determined, the inspector general's office referred The Associated Press to a report it did in February 2009 titled "Hard Lessons," in which it said the auditors ? much like the reconstruction managers themselves ? faced personnel shortages and other hazards.

"Given the vicissitudes of the reconstruction effort ? which was dogged from the start by persistent violence, shifting goals, constantly changing contracting practices and undermined by a lack of unity of effort ? a complete accounting of all reconstruction expenditures is impossible to achieve," the report concluded.

In that same report, the inspector general, Stuart Bowen, recalled what then-Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld asked when they met shortly after Bowen started in January 2004: "Why did you take this job? It's an impossible task."

By law, Bowen's office reports to both the secretary of defense and the secretary of state. It goes out of business in 2013.

Bowen's office has spent more than $200 million tracking the reconstruction funds, and in addition to producing numerous reports, his office has investigated criminal fraud that has resulted in 87 indictments, 71 convictions and $176 million in fines and other penalties. These include civilians and military members accused of kickbacks, bribery, bid-rigging, fraud, embezzlement and outright theft of government property and funds.

Much, however, apparently got overlooked. Example: A $35 million Pentagon project was started in December 2006 to establish the Baghdad airport as an international economic gateway, and the inspector general found that by the end of 2010 about half the money was "at risk of being wasted" unless someone else completed the work.

Of the $51 billion that Congress approved for Iraq reconstruction, about $20 billion was for rebuilding Iraqi security forces and about $20 billion was for rebuilding the country's basic infrastructure. The programs were run mainly by the Defense Department, the State Department and the U.S. Agency for International Development.

A key weakness found by Bowen's inspectors was inadequate reviewing of contractors' invoices.

In some cases invoices were checked months after they had been paid because there were too few government contracting officers. Bowen found a case in which the State Department had only one contracting officer in Iraq to validate more than $2.5 billion in spending on a DynCorp contract for Iraqi police training.

"As a result, invoices were not properly reviewed, and the $2.5 billion in U.S. funds were vulnerable to fraud and waste," the report said. "We found this lack of control to be especially disturbing since earlier reviews of the DynCorp contract had found similar weaknesses."

In that case, the State Department eventually reconciled all of the old invoices and as of July 2009 had recovered more than $60 million.

The report touched on a problem that cropped up in virtually every major aspect of the U.S. war effort in Iraq, namely, the consequences of fighting an insurgency that proved more resilient than the Pentagon had foreseen. That not only made reconstruction more difficult, dangerous and costly, but also left the U.S. military unprepared for the grind of multiple troop deployments, the tactics of an adaptable insurgency and the complexity of battlefield wounds. It also left the U.S. government short of the expertise it needed to monitor contractors.

'Boared' piggy goes to bank in Austria

(AP) ? Piggy bank has a new meaning in a town east of Vienna after a surveillance camera caught a wild pig on a night foray to a local branch of one of Austria's financial institutions.

The Austria Press Agency reports that the inquisitive porker managed to push open a locked sliding glass door of a bank in Hainburg an der Donau to make its way inside. After looking around, it left the same way it came without causing significant damage, with the door locking behind it.

APA, in its report Wednesday, said bank officials became suspicious last month after a member of the early morning cleaning staff noticed large smear marks on the door. A review of surveillance footage identified the unusual visitor.

NBC launches 2 apps to watch the Olympics

(AP) ? NBC launched two mobile apps that will let people watch Olympics events as they happen, look up athlete profiles and access other extra content on their iPads, iPhones and certain Android devices.

NBC said that most of the content will be available only to pay-TV subscribers who have MSBC and CNBC as part of their service. The apps ? NBC Olympics and NBC Olympics Live ? are free to download starting Thursday.

The apps were created by Adobe Systems Inc. Adobe said NBC will receive analysis about how people interact with the content and ads on the apps. Users will be able to set reminders for their favorite events, record, pause or watch clips later, and switch between camera views while they watch, said Jeremy Helfand, vice president of monetization at Adobe.

Until now, he added, online content for the Olympics has been "limited." A big reason for that is NBC has been worried that showing the games online could hurt its TV audience. Under its new Comcast Corp. ownership, NBC executives now think that the extra coverage will increase interest in the games.

NBC said this the first time that all the Olympic events, more than 3,500 hours of coverage, will be available on smartphone and tablet computers. The 2012 Olympics will begin on July 27 with the official opening ceremony in London. In addition to the apps, NBC is also streaming events online.

Despite the popularity of the games NBC has said that it does not expect to turn a profit on them, given the high cost of doing business in London.

RIM CEO hints at future BBM video chat feature

RIM CEO hints at future BBM video chat feature

During today's shareholder meeting RIM CEO Thorsten Heins hinted that BBM, the companies celebrated group messaging service, might be getting some significant upgrades with the debut of BB10. In particular, the words "video chat" were tossed out as an example of how it planned to keep pace with the evolving mobile landscape. In response to a shareholder question, Heins said:

"BBM is a very, strong platform... With upgrading it into a new experience, think about adding features on BB10 such as video chat, for example, within BBM. There's many other features to come with BB10 that will really level this BBM experience... which will upgrade that experience to a whole new social networking experience based on BBM... we want to use this to build a BlackBerry-driven social networking platform."

So, does that mean BlackBerry is getting ready to take on Skype and Google? Perhaps. It would certainly make sense, but we'd stop short calling it a sure shot. What is clear, is that Heins really wants to push BlackBerry as the "social" platform focused on "experience" and seems content to let those other mobile OSes win the apps race.

Social site Formspring hacked, passwords leaked

(AP) ? Social networking site Formspring said Tuesday that it was disabling nearly 30 million registered users' passwords after hundreds of thousands of them were leaked to the Web.

Formspring said in a blog post that the breach happened after someone hacked into one of the San Francisco-based company's servers, adding that some 420,000 encrypted passwords later showed up on an unnamed security forum. Encrypted passwords aren't immediately useable, although they can sometimes be decoded by a savvy attacker.

Formspring founder Ade Olonoh said in a blog post that his company had fixed the vulnerability and upgraded its encryption, adding that the company wanted to "play it safe" and had asked all users to reset their passwords.

"We take this matter very seriously and continue to review our internal security policies and practices to help ensure that this never happens again," he said.

Formspring launched in 2009 as a crowd-powered question-and-answer site. Last month, the company announced a major revamp intended to shift the site's focus toward users' interests.

An email seeking additional detail from the company wasn't immediately returned, and a phone number listed for the site's registrant was out of order.
